Halloween

On Bullshit

I was just innocently watching TV, flipping through the channels when I passed my "Steelroots Top Ten Countdown" and decided to see what was playing (first mistake). I suffered through most of the bands and flipped back and forth between other things while the shittier side of Tooth and Nail's roster appeared on the countdown, all to see what could have gotten voted as the number 1 song. Never could I have imagined how appaled I would be.
These motherfuckers called "The Wrecking" made the number one spot with their "cover" of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". In the rage that I'm in, it's difficult for me to compose into sentences my anger and disgust with this alleged "cover", so permit me a string of adjectives describing my feelings: Fuck, bullshit, assholes, blaspheme, dickwads, scene, fuck, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit, worthless, van flip, cock sneezes, apocalypse, hatred.
I won't dignify the "band" with a myspace link or a video link.

Victory Announces A Ton of Albums

According to Victory via AP,Within the Ruins, The Autumn Offering, Arise and Ruin, Corpus Christi, A Day to Remember and The Sleeping will all be releasing new albums on February 17th.
Of all of these bands I've only heard The Autumn Offering, A Day To Remember, and The Sleeping, and I'm only excited about one of those releases (ADTR).
I used to like The Autumn Offering; their first release on Stillborn was totally badass. I'm going to make the possibly ignorant, yet more probably correct assumption that all the other bands are shitty recycled metal core bands.

Acacia Strain Video Teaser Trailers

So, I'm going to write my review of their show last night soon, but until then, be appeased with these teaser clips from their upcoming "Skynet" video here and here.

Listening to the New Acacia Strain Album - or - My Hot Lava Colonic

Wow. Not that I'm surprised, but this album destroys.

New Saves The Day

A live video of Saves The Day preforming the title track off of their upcoming album "Daybreak" can be seen below:

Charlotte, NC

With the news of Seneca being signed to Lifeforce records it occurs to me that Charlotte is blowing the fuck up with metal bands. A Hero A Fake (from Charlotte) was recently signed to Victory, who is the label host to the amazing Between The Buried And Me (guess where they're from...)
While there is certainly talent in both Seneca and A Hero A Fake, what it sounds like is that labels have been flocking there trying to find the new BTBAM.  And though it's hard to find music that really is original these days, I wonder who else is floating around Charlotte's heavy music scene that isn't just trying to cash in on the BTBAM tech/prog metal sound.

New Mastodon Album Title Revealed

Mastodon has named unveiled the name and the track listing for their up coming album. "Crack the Skye" will be the forth album in an elemental series that the band have been following since their full length debut Remission (fire) in 2002.  2004's Leviathan (water) and 2006's Blood Mountain (earth) have both been met with great praise.  More below from Blabbermouth:

"Crack the Skye" track listing:

01. Oblivion
02. Divinations
03. Quintessence
04. The Czar
I. Usurper
II. Escape
III. Martyr
IV. Spiral
05. Ghost of Karelia
06. Crack The Skye
07. The Last Baron

In a recent interview with MetalSucks, MASTODON bassist/singer Troy Sanders stated about the group's forthcoming album, "I think most of our new material is going to be more under the rock category, but it's pretty epic and involved, extremely layered, broad, melodic, dark, and creepy. When we met up with [producere] Brendan [O'Brien], he had heard some of our demos and he liked some of the rock elements that we had with our stuff. We told him that we were interested in recording, quote, 'a classic rock record that will hopefully have a long shelf life and have solid songs from start to finish, and that will live a lot longer than just listening to it a few times and shelving it.' Our favorite records of all time that we always constantly revisit in our own collection are by bands like JOURNEY, YES, KING CRIMSON, FRANK ZAPPA, KANSAS, and all the shit that we grew up with and were inspired by and continue to revisit. We kind of wanted to attempt to capture a record like that, [at least] in our eyes and ears. The stars had aligned perfectly because Brendan's a perfect match, a funny dude and a great musician who has an amazing ear. He can pick out little things that we can try to do that we hadn't even thought of before, whether it be vocally or sonically with the guitars or something. So it is going to be more of a rock kind of Count Chocula-meets-DEEP PURPLE thing. That's kind of what we're saying."

I Love The Venture Brothers

While watching arguablly the best show on Adult Swim tonight, I was very surprised at a ghost of musical past who made a cameo in the episode.
Dr. Venture is stuck in a dark sewer when a man wearing a red white and blue shirt and a reverse mohawk sneaks up on Venture and sticks his tounge out. Further clues provided in the episode confirmed my immediate suspicions that it was in fact...Keith Flint. "Who is Keith Flint?" you ask? See if this jogs your memory:

Venture: He keeps saying he's a firestarter!

Lies From Lying Liars

So since I'm living at home and don't really have a job right now, I'm at the mercy (and rightfully so) of whatever yard/other work that mom and dad cook up for me.  On Sunday the family project was clearing out some flower beds that are on the side of the house, including transplanting a rose bush.
Mom clipped some of the wild outstretched rose branches and told me to take them to the street.  I closely examined the branches for a safe handhold and discovered that these rose branches (gasp) had no thorns!  "This rose bush doesn't have thorns!" I exclaimed.  "Yeah, not all of them do" replied mom rather casually.
This isn't really too big of a deal except that THIS:

IS A FUCKING LIE!  Shame on you Poison.

Sweet Band, Even Sweeter Name

If you like Comback Kid or Terror, then you should love 50 Lions. I agree, it is about the best damn band name ever. I was worried when I came across them that there was no way that they could be as sweet as their name, and though they aren't (it's a tall order) they are still pretty rad and worth your time. Get mauled.

The Only Thing Baseball Has Ever Done For Me

New Kanye Track

A track of Kanye's 808's and Heartbreaks has leaked. Listen myah.

"Would you like to import the CD "Fear Before" into your iTunes library?"

Yes. Yes I would,

That's the thing I love about pre-orders, they usually show up a day early. I was awakened from my slumber this morning by two packages, one of them was my pre-ordered Fear Before CD and shirt.
In case you haven't listened to the album yet and aren't sure if you will like it, here's what Death + Taxes (A fairly reputable magazine) said about the album: "A wildly imaginative mix of vitriolic post-hardcore, unteachable instrumentation and uncompromising lyricism"

Though I'm going to put my own spin on the album (later of course), I agree with Death + Taxes sentiments.

Razia's Shadow Stream

Everyone over at AP has been shitting themselves over the past couple of weeks about the new Forgive Durden album Razia's Shadow: A Musical.
Song clips were available on the albums website (which was until a couple of weeks ago shrouded in mystery) but now the album is up for full stream on the Forgive Durden website.
I'm listening to the album right now and am pretty impressed. The album has a special guest vocalist for nearly every track who play different characters in the "musical". This is a concept album through and through.
Though I have no prior history with Forgive Durden, something tells me that their first album didn't sound like this (further investigation will be required).
All I can do is suggest that you listen to the album. I'm not really sure what to compare it to right now (gasp). I guess think of your favorite musical re-written by a lounge act with a backing symphony... Confused? Me too. Just give it a listen, you should be able to tell pretty quickly whether or not you will enjoy it.

Scale The Summit Album Completion

prog metal underdogs Scale The Summit have posted a myspace blog about the completion of their new album.  You can find the blog myah.

Every Time I Die Is Much Better Than Guns and Roses

The members of Every Time I Die have posted this bulliten on their myspace page.

An Open Letter to Axl Rose Ending With an Impression of Howard Dean,

Thanks a shitload axl. You haven’t put out in GNR record in 10 years and the month we decide to go out on a tour cleverly named NOVEMBER REIGN, you find it prime time for “Chinese Democracy” to hit shelves. You couldn’t have waited another 3 weeks? We haven’t done a single headlining tour on “The Big Dirty” so this was a really big deal for us. You should have seen Josh’s face light up when he thought of the name. The guys in THE BRONX and STICK TO YOU GUNS were happier than pigs in shit to be a part of this epic journey across the east coast. But you just couldn’t stand to see us happy. Buckethead probably wouldn’t have stolen our thunder. And when I met Matt Sorum at House of Guitars like 16 years ago, he came off as a real nice dude who would be glad to let us have November to ourselves. Well fuck it, we’re doing it anyways. Starting November 1st, we’re going to Quebec City! and then we’re going to Milwaukee! And then we’re going to JOPLIN…AND NASHVILLE…AND RICHMOND AND THEN WE’RE GOING TO FARMINGDALE TO TAKE BACK THE CRAZY DONKEY!!! BEYYYYYAAAWWW!!!!!

love every time i die.
ps. you rock.

Jordan Buckley Art

Jordan Buckley, guitar player for the almighty Every Time I Die has started a myspace page for his artwork.  Homie has some awesome pencil drawings.

Fear Before Pre Order Merch

In case you've listened to, and love the new Fear Before album as much as I do, you can pre-order their new album along with a shirt or hoodie at this location.
In case you didn't heed my advice before, you can listen to the new Fear Before album here.  If you even think that you like heavy music, please, listen to this album.  Even if you don't like heavy music, at least give this album a chance.  It goes so many places and does so many amazing things; a couple of songs are worth your time.

Dillinger Escape Plan Writing New Album

According to Lambgoat, Dillinger Escape Plan is currently writing a new album.

New Fear Before Stream!!!!!!

This has happened much earlier than I expected, but Fear Before has posted their entire new album for streaming over on last.fm. A direct link can be found here .

Update:
-Okay, so it sounds completely different than Art Damage, but we were expecting that. Barring the fact that it sounds nothing like their old stuff, I love it so far.

Update 2: This album kicks ass. I am very pleased and look forward to listening to it more and more. If you have never heard of, or given Fear Before a chance, now is the time to do so. More extensive thoughts later.

Toxic Holocaust

How badass are these dudes?!

Unfortunate throwbacks

It has to happen to everyone; ridiculous songs that you hoped that you had left in your past that suddenly appear back in your head.

See if you remember this one:

Jena Berlin

Based on a hot tip that I got from a friend (Bock), but never did anything with until now, I introduce to those who might not know about them, Jena Berlin

More Google Sweetness

Google announced iGoogle today.

New Eminem

Though I may have already posted news about T.I., you won't see me post too much about rap music on this blog.   It's not that I dislike the genre, simply that I don't think that enough of the "artists" today that are putting out music are in fact artists.  It takes something special to be a good rap artists, and there a few exceptions in my book, Eminem being one of them.  Read about his new release here.

New Reel Big Fish

Though I haven't really kept up with them past "Turn The Radio Off", one of my favorite bands Reel Big Fish have announced via Myspace bulletin that they have a new album coming out in January.
If you have never given Reel Big Fish a listen, I suggest that you stop castigating yourself and listen to their righteous ska jams.
Front man Aaron Barret has been one of my favorite musicians ever since I saw them on Warped Tour in like 9th grade.  His ability to shred and sing harmonies all on his own (and his fan devotion) really impressed me.
Do yourself a favor and check them out, and if you don't like ska, you're beyond my help.

The Mile After

I stumbled across an interesting group of fellows from Charlotte, NC today called The Mile After.  I get a Something Corporate sort of vibe from them (probably an account of the presence of the piano).  Their songs are catchy and seem unsually genuine to me, and they happen to be on tour with Emery, which scores them pretty big points with me.  Maybe I'm crazy, but check em out for yourself.

It's Video Day!!!

Seems like everything I've posted lately has an attatched video, but oh well. You can listen to the new Fall Out Boy song in the "video" below. Regardless of what you think of this band, this is a pretty good song. Not to mention it has Elvis Costello on it...

The Gay Blades

If you haven't heard of The Gay Blades before then the title of this post might be rather confusing.  However this might be your lucky day, because these dudes could just blow your damn mind.
Recently signed to Triple Crown (and deservedly so) these gents are poised to put their finger inside everything you know and love about music.
I could launch a number of adjectives at you or talk about how they sound like a mix of this band and that band on a meth binge, or the love child of a robot and a Gila monster; but those reviews are already all over the Internet.  What you need to know is that The Gay Blades are funnier than your best friends, more mysterious than spontaneous erections, and have an album called "Ghosts" which demands attention for it's wholesomely eclectic mix of brazen and meaningful songs.

Proof: The Gay Blades: Me-Ow!

More Proof

There is also a facebook group called TGB4N, started by some terribly good looking fellow.

UPDATE:

I coulden't have planned to do an article on TGB on a better day.  This video of Clark Westfeild just showed up on AP

These kids read this blog.

"Why are you talking music that isn't rock on your blog called "Rock and Roll Takeover?"

Back In The Saddle

I'm back to the computer after a couple of days of being gone.  On Wednesday I met with one of the camp directors Ben Williams and talked about next year at camp.  After which I drove to Covington, Virgina to Escatawba Farms to help a good friend do some fly guiding.   I left on Friday to go to Hampden-Sydney's homecoming where I saw some old friends and had more than my fair share of libations.  It was a great five days.
In other news, I'm not sure if anyone else watches the site meter as much as I do, but my numbers have almost doubled in the past four days...uhhh...awesome.
I also discovered that some people who I never would have expected to, but that I'm absolutely thrilled about are apparently reading this blog (JMU).  It is with this in mind that I'm going to again bolster and renew my efforts to make this a blog that merits peoples time spent on it.  Thanks again, the future looks bright.

Colors Live

I remember listning to Colors and thinking "I wonder if one day they will ever play this entire cd live?"  "No Way."  "Well maybe once, in some epic preformance."  "But probably not, it would be ridiculous, who could play that much ridiculously technical music for that long?"

Mail Googles...Like Beer Goggles...Get it!

I'm not really a drunk e-mailer, but this is pretty sweet.

Super Tuesday Strikes Again

I didn't spend quite as much money on CD's today as I have before, but I did manage to pick up Senses Fail's Life Is Not A Waiting Room, (and though it came out a while ago) The Showdown's Back Breaker.  I would say "reviews coming soon" but I haven't been very good about doing reviews have I ; )

Seasonal Music

I was talking to Jessie on our way back from Richmond last weekend when Brand New showed up on the ipod and we both started talking about how it was getting to be about "Brand New Time".
I'm not sure about other people (Wesley) but I'm a very seasonal music person. There are just some things that I won't listen too once the weather starts to change. For example I can listen to B rand News Your Favorite Weapon all summer. Perfectly enough, "Soco Amaretto Lime" is the last song on that album, and is the perfect transition into the darker, moodier Deja Entendu. Because Deja Entendu and The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me are not filled with major chord pop-punk songs, they really don't suite me in the summer; but in the winter....perfect.

That said, here's a list of some CD's that I'll be putting into hibernation pretty soon:

1. Four Year Strong - Rise or Die Trying
2. Set Your Goals - Mutiny!
3. New Found Glory - All (except maybe Coming Home)
4. Dashboard Confessional - The Shade of Poison Trees / A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar
5. Reel Big Fish - All
6. Mighty Mighty Bosstones - All
7. Jack Johnson - All but Sleep Through the Static
8. Bob Marley - All

You get the idea...
Here's a list of some things coming out of hibernation for the winter

1. Owen - At Home With Owen
2. Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist, White Pony
3. Boxcar Racer - S/T
4. Boys Night Out - Trainwreck
5. Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
6. The National - Boxer
7. Nickel Creek - Why Should The Fire Die?
8. Thrice - Vheissu
9. Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw

Any arguments?

Conor Oberst and his genius

Conor Oberst released his newest album (technically not a Bright Eyes album) a couple of months ago, and it hadn't occurred to me until I saw a video for one of the tracks from it on a website that I should encourage all of you people to check it out.
Not a traditional Bright Eyes album (simply due to the absence of Mike Moogis) this album still sounds like the acoustic folksy Bright Eyes introduced in last two albums (I'm Wide Awake It's Morning and Cassadega). Oberst reportedly wrote the songs after (or during) a trip to Mexico, and it shows in the music. The album is overall a sunny and more carefree approach to folk that Oberst has turned out in the past. Check out the video for one of the standout tracks:

A Day To Remember Indeed

I went to the Easy Core tour the other night; featuring New Found Glory, A Day To Remember, Four Year Strong, The International Superheroes of Hardcore, and Crime In Stereo. I'll do a full write up soon, but until then, enjoy one of the things I enjoyed the most at the show.

Jimmys Playlist

It wasn't until I was recently reminded that I remembered a function that I had intended for this blog to provide, an opportunity for me to make "playlists" for people. Beyond being a cool idea, I really like making playlists and mix CD's, and I figured this would be an interesting and more universal platform for me to create mixes on. Though I currently lack the technology (maybe I just haven't explored blogspot enough) to post the actual songs on the blog, that may change if someone who knows what the hell they're doing with a computer instructs me.
The idea first came to me to use the blog for this when I played the Thrice E.P.'s for my good friend Brad Luke; he was curious, and wanted to know what other magicians I could pull out of magic book. It is with this purpose refreshed in my mind that I would like to present the first playlist for my other good friend Jimmy Lewis.
Jimmy and I first met at camp last year and saw eye to eye on a number of issues (far to many to name here). Beyond him setting my lunch into place for me everyday this last year of camp, and being just generally excellent company, Jimmy called back in musical response as I snapped my fingers and bounced around the dining hall one day singing "Style" by Frank Sinatra. After I removed myself from the paralysis of excitement, I knew that Jimmy was beyond a friend, but a sort of musical soul mate. It is with that intrinsic bond that I present the Jimmy Lewis playlist:

Genre request: "Killer riffs and double peddle." (Metal)

1. Darkest Hour - With A Thousand Words To Say But One
-A great way to start of any mix.

2. Children of Bodom - Living Dead Beat
-The first track off one of the bands newer albums, this song does everything a children of Bodom song does. It makes you bang your head, shreds, and makes you want to be from Finland.

3. Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession
-Arguably the bands best song. This song in typical BTBAM fashion goes all over the place. The musical ability of this band is completely ridiculous. Do not listen to this song for the first time while driving a car or operating heavy machinery, you don't want your last moments to be spent starring at your stereo before you crash into a wall.

4. August Burns Red - Barbarian
-August Burns Red are pretty much a total crush fest. Breakdowns fly from left and right amidst blast beats, and neck spanning guitar work. A wonderful blend of harmony and destruction.

5. Four Year Strong - Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Hell
- Though Four Year Strong are decidedly less "br00tal" than the three previous bands, what they lack in aggression, they make up for in their insanely tactful and fun mix of hardcore and pop. Breakdowns, riffs, gang vocals, wrapped in sweet, delicious vocal harmony. Fucking delicious.

6. Winter Solstice - To The Nines
-Straight up, unapologetic metalcore. Riffs as much as you want and double basses even more than that. Some of my favorite kick drums on any album, full of punch but with a nice layer of smacking treble on top. Plus you get a totally sweet vocal guest spot from Tim Lambesis of As I Lay Dying.

7. Maylene & The Sons of Disaster - Memories of the Grove
-Maylene always makes me want to be on a road that is dusty and bumpy in a totally jacked Chevy Silverado with the top cut clean off and drinking Jack Daniels straight from the bottle. If this doesn't get you going, you might be beyond my help. Southern slang, hardcore heritage, all awesome.

8. Unearth - Zombie Autopilot
-One of the more Swedish influenced tracks from the powerhouse that is Unearth. Interesting and eclectic song craft really help this band stand out amidst their metalcore peers, though to lump them in the metalcore heap is to miss a lot of what is Unearth. They groove like a hardcore band, and make fretboard magic like Swedes.

9. Throwdown - Holy Roller
- The first track of the bands latest album, "Holy Roller" finds Throwdown picking up almost right where Pantera left off. Blending their hardcore roots with the southern swag of Pantera, this is a showcase of how a band can cross from one metal genre to another with great success. Gnarly riffs and a badass rhythm section make this one a surefire in the section of "killer riffs, and double peddle".

10. Hatebreed - Doomsayer
-The most hardcore (as far as genre is concerned) of the songs on the list so far. Hatebreed is Hatebreed, and they invite anyone who doesn't like it to get the fuck out. Crunchy ass guitars, pummeling bass, and a shit ton of attitude, Hatebreed pulls no punches.

11.Lamb 0f God - Laid To Rest
- I don't want to cheapen the experience by trying to describe it in words. It's a cop out I know, but if you haven't heard this song before, or even heard Lamb of God before, than you should be the one in trouble, not me.

So there you have it. The first mixtape! I would encourage anyone who disagrees or thinks that anything should be added, to say so in a reply. Jimmy, let me know what you think. More hardcore? More metal? More screaming? Faster? The majority of these I don't think are on Kyles ipod, but in the true spirit of the mixtape, hopefully you'll find something new that you enjoy.
